A school for all
Gruppo Montenegro support to local communities in Kenya
Gruppo Montenegro is aware of the difficulties that some of the local communities around the world must face in their everyday life, especially in some areas which are less developed. For this reason, Gruppo Montenegro is committed to supporting those local communities to improve their well-being and life quality, having a positive impact on their growth, sustenance and social services.
Partnership with Roger Clarke
In 2017 Gruppo Montenegro decided to embark on a social support pathway, in partnership with Roger Clarke and his team, aimed at developing the present and future of several local communities in Africa, with a concrete impact on their everyday activities. Roger Clarke has worked for years as a partner of Gruppo Montenegro on the procurement of spices for the Cannamela brand. After many years in this business, he decided to move to Kenya, devoting his time and efforts to actions in the social and humanitarian field.
To monitor the progress of all the projects it promotes and to keep supporting new ideas to the advantage of local communities, Gruppo Montenegro currently finances several initiatives, targeted especially to children and schools, also thanks to the help of Elisa Cirone, who actively works in the field. More specifically, in the case of four different schools in Obanga, Ogongo, Pe-Hill and Tido, structural requalification work has been completed, as well as several projects related to food and drinking water delivery services, through agricultural programmes and the installation of water tanks.
Social projects funded by Gruppo Montenegro to date
2017
Cannamela Agricultural Activity programme
Ogongo School
It became almost self-sustainable within its agricultural area thanks to the donation of a water tank, used to feed the greenhouse, and has a padlock on the tap to preserve the water they have
Obanga School
With this program, pupils and teachers received pineapples, sugar, milk, rice, corn grits, tea, salt and cooking oil.
Pe-Hill School
The funds were used to provide a security fence around the farm, to keep out wandering wild animals. Also, a new “tree nursery” was started to help sensitize pupils on deforestation issues.
2018
Water projects to support the schools in their need for an adequate drinkable water supply
This was a 2-year program, where in the first phase each school was made able to access a water supply on a regular basis and in the second year a water purification system was installed to provide clean drinkable water. At the end of this project each school had access to sufficient water for the entire year.
Ogongo School
An old water tank, which had not been used for more than 5 years, was refurbished in order to have a large water tank that could be filled when electric power was available.
Obanga School
Pipes have been repaired and taps have been added along its route to satisfy local community water needs. In addition, a 10,000-liter tank has been installed that is filled twice a day for local consumption needs.
Pe-Hill School
Gruppo Montenegro, along with other private donors, organized the drilling of a new hole for a water well, which was completed in late 2018.
2019
Ogongo School
The rainwater tank was repaired. It was built a new concrete base to hold two 10,000 litre tanks fed by the construction of new guttering. The whole year was also dedicated to implementing the water filtration system.
Pe-hill School
A new artesian well was drilled. A building was rebuilt in order to house a rooftop water tank to provide water for farm irrigation.
Tido School
From 2019 also this primary school was supported by Gruppo Montenegro funds. As first activity, a new facility was built to provide adequate capacity of hygiene services.
2020
Ogongo Schule
After a few years of funded support, Ogongo School became finally self-sufficient. The school farm is very profitable and the water filtration works very well.
Obanga Schule
In January, Gruppo Montenegro donated more funds for bunk beds and water tanks and to refurbish the old small girls’ dormitory into a school reading room and library.
Pe-Hill Schule
The school was equipped with adequate buildings, more classrooms and dormitory space. They are the only school with a kitchen building and an assembly / dining hall. The school library was finished and the project for a water distribution system to connect the artesian well with the rainwater tanks was completed.
Tido School
Gruppo Montenegro funded a project to start growing trees and vegetables for both educational and sustenance. Furthermore works started to put a brick and stone base to the school assembly area and to provide desks and chairs. The school had a very limited supply of water and very inadequate kitchen, activities started to improve these two points.
